I understood this while I was in the theater watching it. I didn’t need SR to tell me. Most people didn’t get this because they think all interpretations of Star Wars they come up with are static. Even gen x OT fans should be able to understand that the Star Wars lore changes at any moment. The first trilogy is the perfect example of retcon gone wild.
The theme of TLJ was FAILURE! Luke FAILED! Just like Ben, Yoda, and the rest of the Jedi. Yoda literally says it. People don’t understand the changes a person goes through as they age. They don’t stay the same forever.
I’m willing to bet that most people complaining about Luke’s character change wouldn’t complain if he fully went dark, but since he briefly considered it and caught himself, it’s some huge character shift.

Unfortunately, the last Jedi was one of the most woefully chaotic messes I’ve ever seen. I’ve honestly never been interested in seeing it again.
