Spoiler alert for Doctor Who

Jinkx Monsoon, famed “RuPaul’s Drag Race” alum, has made a striking debut as the villain Maestro in “Doctor Who.” Appearing in the episode titled “The Devil’s Chord,” Monsoon plays a music-manipulating antagonist opposite Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor. The episode, notable for being the series’ first musical, showcases Monsoon’s theatrical flair, particularly during a musical battle with the Doctor. In an off-Broadway twist to the character, Monsoon’s portrayal draws inspiration from iconic roles like the Joker and the Child Catcher from “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” adding a unique blend of menace and charisma to the timeless series.

  1. Watching the episode as I type this. Jinkx Monsoon has devoured so much of the scenery that I’m surprised there’s anything left for the rest of the cast to interact with, and I’d be perfectly happy never to see The Maestro again going forward.

Over the years I’ve found that, for me, characters that are designed to be over-the-top and bombastic walk a very fine line. Every so often, I find a performance that makes me think “Once is enough”. This is one of those times.

  2. I love how people throw “woke” and “wokeness” round as insults.
Doctor Who has always been “woke”(your word), but because it didn’t involve gay, trans or drag queen characters all you bigots didn’t notice.

  3. for the people crying “woke” i have news for you doctor who has always been “woke,” the first producer was a woman and the first director was gay. doctor who has been a progressive show from day 1 and always will be.

  4. Pointing out again that the episode was on the night of Eurovision: so, a big, camp, celebration of the importance of music in life appeared on the night of a big, camp, musical competition. I have never seen Jinkx Monsoon before: but she was quite convincingly awful and amazing.

  5. I love how in order to be an actual fan, you’re just supposed to take whatever you’re given without complaint or comment no matter how bad or poorly written or how much it screws up the story/ lore/characters already established. Good forbid we say, this is subpar to what this show has been and could be.

  6. As much as I am hooked to David Tennant as The Doctor, this episode was brilliant! Loved the Doctor. Loved the Villain. Loved the atmosphere. And a big compliment for the costume designer. That piano dress was amazing!

  7. I didn’t hear about the show until Eccleston was the doctor. I watched a few episodes here and there when nothing else was on but it always felt like a dollar store budget sci fi. I watched Matt Smiths run the most; even though I didn’t enjoy the show overall his performance was phenomenal.

  8. Gibson is absolutely excellent, Gatwa’s doing ok, not sure why he needs to randomly shout at times but he has potential to be amazing. That musical number was awful. The episodes so far have been ok, nothing spectacular though
