  1. The Forerunners were never the bad guys to begin with if you paid attention to the deeper lore. The precursors promised the Forerunners the mantle of responsibility (title that gives a species control of the galaxy), then decided to give it to Humanity instead whom were the Forerunners rival. This understandably angered the Forerunners who then decided to wipe out the Precursors. The Flood was the result of Humanity messing with things they didn’t understand. Humanity’s excursion into Forerunner territory while they ran from the Flood led to the War between Humanity and the Forerunners, ultimately resulting in Humanity’s defeat due to fighting on a 2 front war. The Forerunners didn’t realize the threat the Flood posed until it was too late, which ultimately led to their defeat and the firing of the Halos.

They were never the bad guy, they were just terribly arrogant and only realized their mistakes when it was far too late.
