  1. Even penguins and polar bears can freeze to death….. taun tauns freeze if caught out on the ice after dark and alone, as a herd animal they probably shelter like penguins, taking turns to be on the inside of the group….

  2. There are animals evolved to live on Earth that will die in the cold. Like, all of them, if it’s cold enough and they don’t move to shelter. Plus, who says Tauntaun evolved on Hoth? Even if it did, maybe it evolved in an equatorial region and the rebel base was polar… the equator could be frozen but not as cold as the poles…

  3. Yes, such a huge “plot hole” you have identified.

As everyone knows every organism that evolved in a cold climate is 100% immune to any and all harsh weather, no matter how much time they spend in it or how cold temperatures get. That’s how evolution works, it grants magical abilities!!

And I think most of us are aware that Star Wars was actually a work of non fiction, akin to a nature documentary and was completely based on science and facts (it’s all in Lucas’s autobiography).

It’s true all of it, the Force, the Jedi, it’s all true!!

  4. Marine mammals will drown if underwater for too long without surfacing to breathe (and it’s not even that long). So it’s not impossible for a species to evolve in a harsh environment but still be vulnerable to what makes it harsh.

  5. This isn’t a very good meme, and this page usually posts great ones. But, even as a kid watching Ep 5, I immediately understood that those animals are not always outside, especially not in big storms like Han was stuck in. Caves on Hoth were established. And others here have mentioned that the creature was domesticated and probably kept mostly inside. I thought it was obvious that nobody wanted to be outside during that kind of weather.

  6. You do know that many animals that live in the arctic migrate elsewhere, right? Also, animals that do stay up there year round huddle in tight herds, and take turns on the interior warming up.

Solo tauntauns used as mounts don’t have that luxury.

  7. it WOULD have been with the rest of its herd snuggled up in an ice cave, if it weren’t for those meanie-head rebels who decided to go for a ride. At night. In a storm.

  8. There’s actually nothing that indicates they’re from Hoth. Also, mammals in arctic level climates keep together for ambient warmth, and this poor beast only had Han, who we know is cold hearted as hell.

  9. This is what happens when people don’t think anything through, or read, or watch nature documentaries… or think. Even when they literally stated that not even taun tauns could survive the night exposed in the open, but I guess whoever did this “thought” it was funny 🤷🏻‍♂️

  10. Your Tauntaun will freeze before you reach the first marker.. it’s a warm blooded animal that’s likely a herd animal, they most likely seek out caves or dig out shallow Burroughs and huddle up to endure the weather much like arctic wolves and foxes do so riding that beast was the only thing keeping it alive and when Han stopped, his Tauntaun likely went into shock and died from exhaustion and extreme cold setting in

  11. It was a blizzard. It was an unexpected amount of cold and Han forced it out in that cold when it probably would have been hunkered down in the extreme cold storm/night.

  12. I always thought it was due to exhaustion. They were scouting whole day. Then han went to search for luke who knows how long. Look at the way it dies, just wheezes and colapses. Could be heart failure,

  13. the tauntauns were well adapted to the daytime temperature on Hoth, although they could not handle the chilling extremes of the night, which often reached below −60°C.

In the wild, tauntauns often traveled in herds of 25, and could burrow into the snow for warmth

  14. Hey, there’s always a temperature tolerance threshold, beyond which an organism can’t survive, especially when that creature hasn’t eaten food or had water or whatever these guys would need to metabolize for energy, while expending large amounts of those energy reserves

  15. I mean, humans and animals die to weather all the time on Earth, frostbite, gangrene, hypothermia, and heat stroke to name some, so in most cases, we are these poor animals, destined to have some space-faring dude use our guts as shelter.

  16. Don’t taunt the tauntauns.. They are noble beasts and would know better than to be walking about in a blizzard with darkness coming. Hans shot first and was responsible for the death of this tauntaun. 😉

  17. 1) The film doesn’t indicate that they are native to Hoth, which may be colder than their native world.

    2) Han rode his tauntaun to exhaustion. Humans have done that to horses in various climates on Earth.

  18. Wait. Who said Taun-Tauns are indigenous to Hoth? Since they are domesticated to ride, I would assume they were brought to Hoth with the rebels as a useful pack-animal for that environment. Highly unlikely that they arrived, captured and tamed some, made custom saddles and gear for them, with all else that’s going on with setting up a new base of operations.

  19. Wait, didn’t the tauntauns die only because human(oid)s killed them? They didn’t just die of exposure, yeah? I honestly don’t remember. It’s been a couple decades since I’ve seen the originals.
